Tabot'ap at Pulguksa, Kyŏngju
Tabot'ap · Pulguksa · Kyŏngju

Scope

The first layer of the corpus focuses on stone stupas (석탑, 石塔) and explicitly distinguishes Silla, Paekche, Koguryŏ, Grand Silla, Koryŏ and Chosŏn. Funerary stupas of masters (승탑, 僧塔 / 부도, 浮屠) and reliquary stupas (사리탑, 舍利塔) are kept separate so that monuments with different architectural functions are not conflated. For Koguryŏ, no surviving stone pagoda is artificially added to this layer: the mainly wooden pagoda remains belong to a distinct archaeological corpus.

Organisation

The catalogue is designed as a database filterable by kingdom, date, type, number of stories, location and heritage status. The main view follows a chronological sequence from the earliest to the latest monument and links each entry to its location data and, where image rights permit, a photographic thumbnail.

Reference sources

Method: when a precise year is not securely attested, the date is left as a period or century rather than assigning an invented exact date.
